Programs

Living Waters International's programs address basic human and spiritual needs of the peoples of East Africa. We assist Roman Catholic missionaries and the people they serve. Our programs include student sponsorship and seminarians' support. Other projects include: construction of formation houses, schools, student hostels, churches, village chapels, health clinics, food relief, tuition assistance and teachers' salaries at Catholic schools, religious formation, retreats and support for the daily living expenses of religious, training of lay catechists, housing for the poor, wells, and solar and wind power facilities. Training of Lay Catechists

Living Waters International, through competitive grants, has provided funds for the training of lay catechists in many of the parishes in East Africa. Among these are two parishes in the Arusha Archdiocese of Tanzania.

St. Stephen the Martyr Parish - Maji ya Chai

St. Stephen the Martyr was declared a parish and entrusted to the care of the Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales by His Grace Josephat L. Lebulu, Archbishop of the Arusha Archdiocese of Tanzania on the 7th of February 2010. The total number of families in the parish is four hundred and eighteen; the number of faithful is one thousand seven hundred seventy-six. St. Stephen the Martyr Parish has seventeen Small Christian Communities (SCCs). The parish has nineteen lay catechists. Each Small Christian Community has its own catechist, plus there is one main catechist and his assistant for the parish. In this parish area there are four primary schools and one secondary school. The Small Christian Communities gather to pray each Saturday led by their respective catechists.

St. Francis de Sales Parish - Ngurdoto

St. Francis de Sales of Ngurdoto was declared a parish and entrusted to the care of the Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales by His Grace Josephat L. Lebulu on the 14th of February 2010. The total number of families of the parish is one thousand one hundred and ninety-four; the faithful of the parish number five thousand two hundred and thirty.

The parish has five village outstation churches in addition to the main parish center at Ngurdoto. The parish center and each of the outstations have one main and an assistant catechist respectively, making the total number of catechists in the parish twelve. There are eighteen SCCs at the parish center. Sakila village outstation has nine SCCs, King'ori Mugaga village has five, King'ori Madukani has five, King'ori Ntwe has two and Leguruki has two. Fifty-three catechists serve the parish. In this parish area there are six primary schools and four secondary schools.

Catechists administer to the spiritual needs of the outstation churches by teaching catechism and leading prayer services when a priest is not available to celebrate Mass. Catechists also attend to the spiritual needs of the Small Christian Communities in their village.
